THE OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT IS TO IMPLEMENT AN OPTO-ELECTRONIC SYSTEM FOR READING OPTICAL FIBRE SENSORS (FBG) WHICH: HAS COMPARABLE AND/OR SUPERIOR PERFORMANCE TO THE STATE OF THE ART (IN TERMS OF PERFORMANCE AND COST), IS USABLE IN HOSTILE ENVIRONMENTS (E.G. AEROSPACE, NAVAL, ETC.) AND ALLOWS FOR A CLEAR OPTIMISATION OF BOTH INITIAL AND OPERATIONAL COSTS OF THIS TYPE OF SYSTEMS, TO FACILITATE THEIR UPTAKE IN DIFFERENT AREAS. MANY THEORETICAL OR HYPOTHETICAL FBG QUESTIONING INTERROGATORS WILL BE REPORTED IN THE FOLLOW-UP TO THIS DOCUMENT. HOWEVER, NONE OF THEM IS SUFFICIENTLY SATISFACTORY FOR THE SPEED OF RESPONSE, ACCURACY, ACCURACY, COST AND ‘MULTIPLEXABILITY’ OF THE SENSOR SYSTEM, ESPECIALLY IF THEY ARE INTENDED TO BE APPLIED IN HOSTILE ENVIRONMENTS. IN THE FIST PROJECT, AN INNOVATIVE WAVEFORM INTERROGATOR BASED ON AWG IS PROPOSED WITH A THEORETICAL MODEL BASED ON THE GAUSSIAN APPROXIMATION FOR THE INTERROGATOR.
