Öms Smart Specialisation (ÖMS3)

Smart Specialisation is a key activity in the flagship initiative “Innovation Union” on Europe 2020 agenda for smart and sustainable growth for all. Smart specialisation means that a Member State or region selects a limited number of priorities based on its own strengths and comparative benefits and where there is the greatest potential for a lasting effect. This strategy helps regions to find their real innovation potential and then target their industrial and knowledge structures towards new industries, services and international markets. The purpose of smart specialisation is to help economies focus on activities with greater added value and greater competitiveness. Each county in Eastern Central Sweden has identified its areas of strength but has come different ways in the work with smart specialisation. In order to better utilise the power of Öms, common forces need to be identified that can form the basis of a major regional development. This requires a smart specialisation strategy that covers the whole Öms, which is also the overall goal of this project. The strategy must be long-term and accepted by all counties. To achieve this goal, each county’s strength areas will be analysed. The analysis forms the basis for prioritising unique, existing or new, regional areas of strength with the potential for smart specialisation. Better coordination between counties enables joint priorities and capacity building. This also includes actively engaging companies, academia, etc. in the collaboration structure. The project will result in an Öms-wide platform for continued strategic collaboration.
