Wood Innovation in the North (tiin)

The project is a collaborative project between Luleå University of Technology and SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden. The overall goal of the project is sustainable growth in the region’s wood industry based on sustainable use of regional forest raw materials. The project’s goal is to contribute to increased competitiveness and growth of the region’s companies in the wood industry and its subcontractors. Needs-driven innovation and an elaborate strategy will be used to ensure future recruitment needs in which increased gender equality and increased diversity have a prominent position. The project has the following five milestones: ¿The wood industry in the region has access to new X-ray and camera technology in its industrial processes, which lays the foundation for increased further processing of the regional forest raw material. Industrial inspection is established in the region’s wood industry and exported by the region’s machine suppliers. The government sawmills apply automatic drying processes that contribute to increased energy efficiency, quality and capacity. Norway pine is processed through new base processes that provide tougher materials, sustainable impregnation methods and a more form-stable material, properties that increase the competitiveness of the northern forest raw material. ¿Region occupies the position as a national leader in the field of industrial manufacturing of modular and volume-based wooden houses through new technologies and new products. The project is divided into seven sub-projects, each of which is linked to the milestones. The project is carried out within the center of WoodCenter North (TCN) at Luleå University of Technology and uses the work-right that has been developed within the center with close collaboration. The project is based on contributing to the challenges and opportunities faced by the wood industry in the region with, for example, increased competition from other types of wood and materials, low processing rates, an increasing shortage of labour and competence, and a lack of efficiency in production processes.
