Bioreduction agent for metallurgical processes – Bio4Metals

The overall goal of the project is to increase the profitability of the region’s large supply of biomass. By strengthening opportunities for local biocarbon processing, it can be used as fuel in metallurgical industries, thereby reducing the region’s CO2 emissions. The aim of the project is to promote the growth of several categories of SMEs from biomass suppliers to biocoal manufacturers through the development of sustainable production of new bio-based products for metallurgical industries. The project has the following milestones: Milestones for Work Packages 1 (AP1): Delivery of a decision basis containing information about – requirements specification of bio-coal for use in various mining and metallurgical processes – impact on renewable energy use and CO2 emissions depending on application – expected future demand. Milestones for Work Packages 2 (AP2): Validation of decision bases in intermediate targets for AP1 using properties and test results from initial experiments with existing bio-carbons for various applications. Milestones for Work Packages 3 (AP3): Delivery of instructions regarding preliminarily identified optimal process conditions for the production of desired bio-carbon products via various methods and possible co-production of green chemicals. Milestones for Work Packages 4 (AP4): Validation of preliminary instructions for process conditions provide desired bio-carbon products in the production of bio-carbons on a larger scale. Quantification of qualitative influences on the properties of cold bound agglomerates and coke from pilot scale. Milestones for Work Packages 5 (AP5): Criteria for design, construction, installation and economic analysis for the implementation and production of bio-coal locally where the forest raw material is available are compiled, including technoeconomic analysis of a first regional commercial stationing for each process concept. Milestones for Work Packages 6 (AP6): Widespread dissemination of the results by reaching at least 20 SMEs by the project results through seminars/individual contacts and 5 popular science publications have been made and distributed to the target group. The project is carried out as a collaborative project between Swerea MEFOS AB, Luleå University of Technology, Umeå University and the following five regional SME companies: Future ECO North Sweden AB, Processometri AB, BioEndev AB, HKS Energy Consulting AB and BioFuel Region AB. The project is expected to contribute to methods to develop biomass for biocarbons. Bio-coal can be used in the regional metallurgical industry and thus help reduce the region’s emissions of CO2. The metallurgical industry in the region with LKAB, SSAB and Boliden contributes to a large proportion of the region’s CO2 emissions. SSAB’s blast furnace in Luleå is the largest single point emission of CO2 in Sweden.
