The overall aim of the project is to strengthen Mittstråket as a functional and sustainable cross-border transport path that promotes development in the Mid Nordic Region. The goals of the project are to strengthen a sustainable path through: 1.Shorter travel times 2.Increased freight capacity 3.Improved traffic safety 4.Common vision, strategy and action plan for Mittstråket’s continued development. The project is governed by the overall project management of Västernorrland County Administrative Board. Investments in transport infrastructure are dominant activities in the project. The responsibility for cost-calculating, procuring and implementing these investments lies on the respective partners. Investments in transport infrastructure are mainly carried out by the Swedish Transport Agency. Åre Municipality, Östersund Municipality and Sundsvall Municipality will make investments at a local level. The main project leader at the Länsstyrelsen Västernorrland County Administrative Board is responsible for the implementation of the activities to be carried out by the County Administrative Board and for the coordination of the entire project. Communication and marketing efforts ensure that investments result in long-term benefits in the form of safe and sustainable travel. The project will conduct trainings and workshops to highlight gender equality aspects in the physical planning and transport sector. The regional business sector is involved in the implementation mainly through the development of the strategy for how the benefits can increase the investments and investments made in Mittstråket. The project’s expected results and benefits at the end of the project period: “It is faster to travel behind the Midway Line and that more people travel collectively by bus and especially by train. — There is an increased capacity on the E14 and the Midway, which makes it easier for freight carriers to use the Mittbanan and Mittstråket. — Significant efforts in the infrastructure locally and regionally have created opportunities for a full-travel perspective where the bike, bus, train and car complement each other. — There are developed forms of collaboration between responsible parties, which creates opportunities for future development of Mittstråket. Through coordinated planning, planning at municipal, regional and national levels has been harmonised and created better conditions for future investments along the route. — Decision makers at national and international level have greater knowledge about Mittstråket and Mittbanan. “It has been clarified at both national and EU level that investment in the line creates conditions for regional, national and international development and growth. In the longer term, travel times and increased knowledge of Mittbanan have resulted in increased travel on the railway. This means that the local and regional industry and other employers have increased access to labour through better conditions for commuting along Mittstråket. Shorter travel times also mean that the attractiveness is increasing for companies to establish themselves, which gives significant regional growth effects in the form of more jobs and increased tax revenues through more residents in the area’s municipalities. By improving the possibilities of travelling collectively, and especially by train, both women and men can make use of the possibilities offered by region enlargement. This also applies to new arrivals from other countries who, through better communications, get close to work, studies and community services.
