Sweden currently has a successful furniture and interior design industry where a number of nationally and internationally leading interior and furniture companies have contributed to increasing international awareness for Swedish design and quality. A common insight among companies and needs owners in the form of public and architects is the transition to a more sustainable society. This will be done with products and services linked to a circular economy and a climate-neutral society. Innovation Square is a cross-border project aimed at the value chain in the Swedish interior design industry. The project aims to bring together furniture producers, glass manufacturers, textile companies, requirements, international architects, actors in the public sector and leading research in material flows and sustainable materials. In 2016, I-Days was conducted, a feasibility study where a survey was conducted around the companies’ interest in participating in an in-depth innovation process. The feasibility study identified an innovation programme in which the industry is allowed to test new methods and tools for open innovation. The results of the feasibility study show that new forms of collaboration and support for innovative processes at regional level are needed. Within the framework of the programme, an open call for pilot projects is being made and 3-5 projects will be adopted. Participants in the programme will design a number of concrete products and service innovations aimed at predefined societal challenges linked to relevant sustainability problems in the spatial, both private and public environments. The individual projects within the framework of the programme will be carried out in innovation labs that act as catalysts where project partners and needs owners can meet and connect theory with practice. In the long term, the project will contribute to the development of new methods and tools for open innovation, provide better conditions for clearer requirements in interior-based procurements, increased awareness and targeting for strategic sustainability efforts and increased international competitiveness of participating companies.
