Recent years’ positive population development in Kalmar has had an impact on the traffic system. The establishment of Linnaeus University’s new campus will contribute to further traffic to and from the central parts of the city. With increased train traffic, the barriers at three existing level crossings will be closed to passing pedestrian, bicycle and car traffic during most of the day’s hours, which seriously impedes both communication between the city’s different parts and the possibility of reaching the travel centre from adjacent municipalities. For business, Kalmar Central Station’s function and accessibility is a crucial factor. The opportunities to travel between Kalmar, Karlskrona and Växjö are also fundamental to strengthen development and growth in the direction of a common labour market region in southeast Sweden. A completed study has identified two locations as an alternative for the location of a future station. The feasibility study activities will provide answers to the principles for designing a future station environment and whether both designated alternatives are viable. An activity in the feasibility study refers to analysis of mobility needs in the society that a future central station will serve. Another activity investigates the possibility of building a central station in the previously identified locations. In addition, the effects from the environmental and climate perspectives should be assessed by the two alternatives.
