Fiber to Gävleborg 4

Fiber to Gävleborg is a collective name for several broadband projects owned and coordinated by Region Gävleborg. Together, the county’s municipalities will build fibre for about SEK 250 million in the years 2015-2022. The goal is to increase the possibility of small and medium-sized enterprises to access fast broadband. Fibre to Gävleborg 4 is the fourth fibre project that Region Gävleborg is applying for with the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth since October 2015. The region has previously been granted three fiber projects in which all the county’s municipalities participate. Fiber to Gävleborg 4 draws fiber to localities and villages but does not connect any properties. The project is a collaborative project. The project has a steering group, project group and reference group. Over a three-year period, we will build fibre for approximately SEK 44 million and this will increase the possibility for municipalities’ small and medium-sized companies to access high-speed broadband. The project will be financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERUF), municipalities and Region Gävleborg’s regional development funds. Gävleborg County has a broadband strategy for the years 2012-2020 where the goal is that by 2020, 95 % of the companies and 90 % of households will have access to at least 100 Mbit/s. In 2018, Region Gävleborg started work, together with the county administrative board and municipalities, to develop new goals and focus areas for the continued broadband work. The work has resulted in an action plan for the years 2019-2025. The plan is for referral until August 2019. The proposed goal is to: By 2020, 95 per cent of all households and companies in Gävleborg should have access to broadband of at least 100 Mbit/s By 2023, the whole of Gävleborg should have access to stable mobile services of good quality By 2025 Gävleborg should have access to fast broadband – 98 per cent of all households and companies should have access to 1 Gbit/s – 1.9 per cent of all households and companies should have access to 100 Mbit/s – 0.1 per cent of all households and companies should have access to 30 Mbit/s. Broadband is a digital highway that enables rapid communication and access to information and services. Based on their broadband strategies and IT infrastructure plans, municipalities have selected the locations to be connected with fibre networks and are thus covered by the project. The target group for the project is small and medium-sized enterprises in locations that lack high-speed broadband. By establishing new optical fibre cables to locations that currently lack fibre networks, companies’ conditions for growth, competitiveness and trade are increasing.
