The HandsOn project is led by RISE Interactive in Piteå (which continues to be referred to as Interactive). HandsOn builds on collaborations and results from DesignIT funded through the European Regional Development Fund. The overall goal of HandsOn is that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMF) will gain more knowledge and experience of work in interaction design, user experience and user-centred development. SMF strengthens its innovation capabilities, gains new tools and methods, and practical experience of working with digitalisation and innovation in collaboration with research actors. The project also contributes to continued strong research institutes in the region that collaborate with industry and society. The goal of the project is achieved through the main activities Innovation support, Cross-border innovation and refinement and dissemination. In the activity Innovation support Interactive and companies collaborate practically to explore design, new technology and innovation method based on the company’s own needs. In the activity Cross-border innovation Interactive and SMEs drive innovation projects at intersections between different areas. The projects are experimental and applied in which ideas and solutions can be tested. The process and dissemination activity is used, further developed and packaged with the results of the DesignIT project such as technology studios, demos, prototypes and methods. The project can start quickly by already existing methods and tools from DesignIT as well as the built-up technology studio. The project’s structure is well established with companies, business actors and industry organisations, and has already collected more than 20 letter of intent from companies wishing to take part in the project’s activities. HandsOn is expected to result in enhanced innovation capacity and increased innovation activity at SMEs and increased collaboration between companies and research actors. Participating companies are expected to increase expertise in digitalisation, interaction design and user-centered development and gain practical experience of innovation. More SMEs are expected to work with methods and tools for sustainable innovation and have tested remote-independent innovation support. In the long term, HandsOn is expected to lead to more companies developing their products with regard to digitalisation and interaction design. The companies are also expected to have incorporated sustainability aspects into their working methods and in the development of new products and services. HandsOn lowers thresholds between RISE and companies and is expected to lead to more collaborations in new research and innovation projects.
