The aim of the project is to build local networks in sparsely populated parts of Västerbotten County where market conditions for the expansion of broadband infrastructure are lacking. The project is a collaborative project between Region Västerbotten, Umeå Energi and 11 municipalities. A well-developed IT infrastructure increases the opportunities to provide public and commercial services, study, work and conduct business activities. In order for the whole of Västerbotten to grow and develop, all municipalities must be able to offer their inhabitants good opportunities to live and operate in all parts of the county on equal terms regardless of where in the county, one of the basic conditions is good access to digital connectivity. Västerbotten’s goal is that 95 % of the county’s households and companies should have access to a broadband connection of at least 100 Mbit/s by 2020 and also work to achieve the goals of the national broadband strategy for Sweden.
