Fiber to Gävleborg 5

Fiber to Gävleborg is a collective name for several broadband projects owned and coordinated by Region Gävleborg. Together, the county’s municipalities will build fibre for about SEK 250 million in the years 2015-2023. The goal is to increase the possibility of small and medium-sized enterprises to access fast broadband. The municipalities in Fiber to Gävleborg projects have, based on their broadband strategies and IT infrastructure plans, selected the locations to be connected with fibre networks and are thus covered by the projects. Fibre to Gävleborg 5 is the fifth fibre project that Region Gävleborg is applying for with the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth since October 2015. Region Gävleborg has previously been granted four fiber projects in which all the county’s municipalities are participating. Fiber to Gävleborg 5 draws fiber to localities and villages but does not connect any properties. The project is a collaborative project between Region Gävleborg and Bollnäs Energi AB. The project has a steering group, project group and reference group. The project will build fibre for about 3.7 million and this will increase the possibility for the municipality’s small and medium-sized companies to gain access to high-speed broadband. The project will be financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERUF), Bollnäs Energi and Region Gävleborg’s regional development funds. Gävleborg County has a regional plan for broadband 2019-2025 where the target is: By 2020, 95 per cent of all households and companies in Gävleborg should have access to broadband of at least 100 Mbit/s – By 2023, Gävleborg should have access to stable mobile services of good quality – In 2025 Gävleborg should have access to fast broadband and 98 per cent of all households and companies should have access to 1 Gbit/s o 1.9 per cent of all households and companies should have access to 100 Mbit/s and 0.1 per cent of all households and companies should have access to 30 Mbit/s. Communication is a prerequisite for growth and sustainable development. Broadband is a digital highway that enables rapid communication and access to information and services. The target group for the project is small and medium-sized enterprises in locations that lack high-speed broadband. By establishing new optical fibre cables to locations that currently lack fibre networks, companies’ conditions for growth, competitiveness and trade are increased.
