CoTourism

Through this project, the partners together with the partners want to make powerful efforts to support small and medium-sized companies in the hospitality industry in Blekinge that have been affected or at risk of the effects of the coronapandemine. Experiences from previous crises show that they hit Blekinge’s business and employment hard. During the financial crisis, employment fell in relative terms most in Blekinge of all counties in Sweden. It is too early at the time of writing to establish how the corona crisis has affected the tourism industry companies in the county, but according to the trade association Visita, the crisis risks nearly halving employment opportunities in the industry. Before the corona crisis there were about 800 players in Blekinge with commercial offerings to visitors. These actors financed about 1,100 annual jobs and according to Visita’s report there is a risk that 500 jobs within the hospitality industry will disappear in Blekinge as a result of the pandemic. The crisis is particularly worrying for Blekinge, as the visitor companies in the county during the last decade had a slow and lower rate of development according to a comparison with the industry in other comparable Swedish regions, according to a report from the County Administrative Board of Blekinge in 2019. This is the most important reason for the project. Based on insights after dialogues with several tourism companies during the corona pandemic, the project development has led to the following formulation of the main problem addressed by the project; “Blekinge’s tourism products are not sufficiently sustainablely developed, packaged and/or digitally marketable”. The parties consider this to be the reason why hospitality companies in Blekinge are particularly vulnerable to crises. The problem analysis has further led to CoTourism, based on sustainable development, to work in two areas of action; digitalisation and sustainable business and product development through direct efforts towards the participating companies. In close collaboration with the five municipalities’ business and tourism organisations and Blekinge Arkipelag, an in-depth need map in dialogue with tourism companies will be conducted in the beginning of the project. Based on the outcome of the need mapping, companies will be offered participation in tailor-made efforts made by people with cutting-edge expertise with the aim of increasing the company’s renewal and earnings capacity and thereby competitiveness.
