Preliminary study: Gotland’s corona-affected tourism industry – what is needed?

The prevailing pandemic has knocked away the legs of the Gotland tourism industry and requires extraordinary efforts. The pre-study Gotland’s corona-affected tourism industry – what is needed – will strengthen the conditions for local, regional and national sustainable tourism industry. The preliminary study will inventory and map the current state of how the corona-affected tourism industry on Gotland is feeling and what it needs to be strengthened from the crisis. The feasibility study forms the basis for the implementation project, which will be of long-term benefit for crisis-affected SMEs and entrepreneurs, in order to strengthen their capacity for recovery and transition from the crisis. The initiatives focus on the crisis as an enabler for sustainable development in companies. The result contributes to strengthening Sweden’s tourism industry, breaks the peck in the tourism industry curve that has arisen due to pandemic, and enables Gotland to become an even more export-mogenous destination. In this way, the feasibility study contributes to strengthening Sweden’s attractiveness, strengthening international and national collaboration, and providing knowledge development from companies’ perspectives based on an international context. The feasibility study is well established within Region Gotland and among tourism companies on Gotland, as well as for the implementation project the partners Västervik Framåt and Öland’s tourism company. The results that the feasibility study is expected to yield are not currently available in the project owner’s or the region’s regular operations. The feasibility study will contribute to in-depth knowledge of the needs of critically affected companies. How are the tourism companies on Gotland? How has Corona been affected, how large is the sales stack? What is the ability to change and resilience? Project managers are hired to meet entrepreneurs based on geography and different segments within the industry. It is important to meet the companies where they are and on their terms. The project manager investigates and analyses the current situation and needs of Gotland tourism entrepreneurs based on the aspects: Sustainable business development Sustainable transitionability sustainable economic resilience.
