Malmö is the city in Skåne where the challenges for sustainable urban development are most concentrated. There is a need to reduce segregation, increase employment, stimulate residential development and contribute to a sustainable renewal of residential areas. At the same time, the city’s challenges create conditions for growth potential and employment opportunities that can benefit the entire region. In the collaboration project Malmö Together, Malmö Ideella, the City of Malmö, Sensus and NyföretagarCentrum Öresund want to develop a citizen-controlled innovation platform that can enable sustainable urban development with a focus on Malmö’s prioritised areas. The project owners see a need for an innovation platform that builds on previous initiatives and lessons learned that have been made, but as more systematically and large-scale have their basis in citizen- and needs-driven efforts, to a greater extent driven by civil society actors and that can strengthen innovation capacity in all challenge areas that the City of Malmö points out. Within the framework of four coherent sub-projects, citizens’ needs must be a driving force for a process of renewal and change in which socio-economic development and environmental goals are achieved at the same time as the business sector develops. In the project, the project owners want to try and develop local area-based “grass root incubators” which, unlike traditional incubators, focus on citizen-controlled and business-driven urban development. 150 SMEs (SMFs) and other trade-promoting organisations will receive support through development programmes and business development. Within the incubators, the project will support an initial idea- and development process of 30-40 new product and service innovations linked to societal challenges related to increased employment, housing development and renewal of housing and areas, accessibility, local environment, etc. Malmö Together, Malmö will have led to the creation of a multi-sector innovation platform in Malmö. A platform in the form of meeting places with local incubators, where all parties, based on citizen- and needs-driven efforts, systematically work together to develop innovations that correspond to local societal challenges in the City of Malmö.
