This project aims to establish a node with national and international attractiveness in the field of electrification, energy and mobility especially heavy vehicles. The node will pursue active and concrete work for initiatives where the business community, together with academia and other stakeholders, is driving the transition for electrification. The project is based on a feasibility study within ERUF, conducted in spring 2020, with a clear entry into Öm’s joint smart specialisation work. The feasibility study involved a proposal to gather collaboration in a non-profit association, which is anchored and preparations are underway to form it. As soon as it is formed, the non-profit association will take over the financing responsibility for the part that includes business and research organisations. Furthermore, members of the non-profit association will contribute with skills and resources in the form of personnel from different parts of their organisations, including research, development and test bed organisations, as well as access to equipment linked to open testing and demonstration activities. A consortium of organisations in the application intends to develop the work together, where a large number of small and medium-sized companies will strengthen their competence and capacity for development in the field and increase the number of collaborations with research institutions. In this project, the work will include: development and facilitation of joint research, development and industrialisation projects with several parties, the establishment of an open testing and verification environment based on the strong capabilities and facilities available today. Skills supply and attractiveness work that contributes to strengthening excellence, initiates the transition of existing skills and attracts the right future competence. The brand work establishes a context that enables the actors to be visible, companies are attracted and the region is recognised as a leader in Europe, and creates the conditions for active participation in policy development based on awareness of the region’s capacity and opportunities to raise relevant issues on the political agenda. The consortium includes ABB, Bombardier, Epiroc, Hitachi ABB, InnoEnergy, Mälarenergi, Mälardalen University, Northvolt, RISE, Scania, Svealandstrafiken, Uppsala University and Volvo VCE as well as public organisations Region Västmanland and the City of Västerås. In addition to these, the pre-study work has involved many more, where the work is being developed in the implementation. The strength of the project involves efforts for rebooting after Covid-19, where the vehicle sector has been heavily influenced, as well as efforts to contribute to Sweden’s climate goals. The Restart Commission believes that; Electrification and digitalisation are keys to green transition. But companies need to be able to test the new technology quickly and on a large scale. The Government’s climate action plan identifies heavy transport as the most important contribution to achieving the climate targets, with transport currently accounting for about 30 % of energy consumption, with the goal of reducing environmental impact through a 70 % reduction in emissions. The project contributes in both these areas, within vital business structures. The work will further develop and highlight the internationally strong companies, research organisations and innovation support actors that are involved in an initiative with national and global viability that drives development in a large number of small and medium-sized companies. The project will be managed by the project owner together with the stakeholder group that gathers in the non-profit organisation that is under formation. The non-profit association is intended as a long-term carrier of the results, which are made available to relevant actors.
