Rehabilitation of tram lines and modernisation of street trams in Timisoara, Traseu 5, Calea Bogdanestilor

The overall objective of the project is to increase the average speed of tram travel, improve public transport conditions, comfort and safety, and also save time for the tram users on this route due to shorter travel times and traffic fluidity. The reduction of carbon emissions from transport in the municipality of Timisoara by rehabilitating the tram line on Calea Bogdăneștilor will lead to the promotion and improvement of public passenger transport and, therefore, to increasing its attractiveness, to the detriment of the use of own cars. The project aims to rehabilitate the tram line – a means of clean public transport, arrangement of sidewalks and cycle paths, green areas, bringing a substantial contribution to reducing emissions of pollutants in the atmosphere, reducing dust, noise level and implicitly increasing the comfort and safety of traffic. The project contributes to the objectives of sustainable development by promoting clean transport, increasing comfort conditions, traffic safety and speed of movement, all of which increase the attractiveness of the public transport system for citizens and reduce carbon emissions in the municipality. Through the proposed objectives, the project falls under indicator 1S11 Operations (projects) implemented for public and non-motorised transport. The network infrastructure of tram lines was upgraded to more than 50 % between 2002 and 2008. The investment works at 40.118 km single track line, i.e. 20,059 km double track were financed by an EIB loan, guaranteed by the state budget and the local budget. The rehabilitation of the remaining unrehable tram routes is considered a priority in the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (PMUD) for the Timisoara Growth Pole, in order to enable the sustainable development of mobility in the Municipality of Timisoara and the increase of the volume of passengers transported, especially by means of electric traction transport. Projects for the rehabilitation of tram lines in the municipality are also included in the Integrated Development Strategy of the Timişoara Growth Pole. Also, some of the projects for the rehabilitation of tram lines were selected and prioritised by the Urban Authority of the Municipality of Timisoara in the EISF Justification Document, the project for the rehabilitation of route 5 – Calea Bogdăneștilor being first in the list of priority projects.
