Designing lanes dedicated to public transport in Brasov and adjacent sidewalks

The general objective of the project is to increase the attractiveness of public transport in Brasov, through the design of dedicated lanes and adjacent sidewalks, with a direct positive effect on the reduction of CO2 equivalent emissions generated by motorised road transport. Starting from the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan and the Integrated Urban Development Strategy Brasov, in which the main deficiencies affecting the quality of life and mobility at the level of Brasov Municipality, respectively the air and noise pollution due to motorised road traffic, were highlighted, the project’s goal was established – to increase the quality of life of the inhabitants of Brasov by significantly improving environmental conditions. By increasing the attractiveness of the public transport system, the aim is to discourage the use of the car for urban journeys, to reduce the level of congestion and chemical and noise pollution generated by private transport, to increase the average speed of exceeding public passenger transport vehicles and thus to reduce the time spent by them in traffic, directly leading to a decrease in CO2-equivalent emissions. At the same time, this project dedicated to public transport infrastructure is part of an integrated and complementary approach, along with other projects within the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan, aimed at the acquisition of modern means of transport, components of traffic management systems, as well as other investments aimed at reducing CO2 emissions in the urban area. By implementing this package of projects, it is estimated that about 2 % of the movements currently carried out by private means (polluting, unsustainable) will be carried out with the public transport system. Under these conditions, 2340 daily movements carried out by public transport will result in a reduction of CO2-equivalent emissions of 4.68 t CO2 daily and 1708 t CO2 per year. The project “Fitting lanes dedicated to public transport in Brasov and adjacent sidewalks” is part of the actions supported under Priority Axis 4, Priority of Investments 4.1 Reduction of carbon emissions in municipalities of county residence through investments based on sustainable urban mobility plans, namely “Building/modernisation/extension of dedicated lanes, used exclusively for public passenger transport means”. By building dedicated lanes for public transport on the routes studied, the aim is to increase the average travel speed of public passenger transport vehicles and thus reduce the time spent by them in traffic. Thus, public transport becomes more competitive and cost-effective, compared to the use of private transport, thus creating the conditions for significantly reducing CO2-equivalent emissions from transport.
