Restoration of the Church of the Pilgrimage of Great Panagia in Chalkidiki

The Church of the Pilgrimage of Megali Panagias is located on the edge of a hilly area at a short distance from the town of M. Panagias and has been characterised as a historical preserved monument along with its immediate surroundings. The Church of the Pilgrimma was built in 1862 at Agios Konstantinos, where the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary and the spring of Agiasma was found by residents of the Holy Virgin and since then it has been inextricably linked with the religious, social and cultural life of Halkidiki. It is a three-aisled basilica. The main church is divided by two rows of six columns in three aisles. The central aisle is wider and taller than the two equal sides. In the eastern part of the temple stands only the niche of the sanctuary, as is the case in most post-Byzantine churches, while the niches of prosthesis and deaconikos are inscribed in the thickness of the eastern wall. In the western part of the church, in contact with its main body, a newer addition of reinforced concrete is developed which includes a closed narthex, a semi-outdoor exonarthex and a bell tower. The proposed project includes restoration works of the monument to address the problems due to the earthquake of 1932, in various man-made interventions in the context of extensive reconstructions, recoverys and restorations after the earthquake, as well as the functional modernisation and expansions that followed in the decades after 1980. .
