The project concerns the construction of a planted roof of 1,510 sq.m. at the 26th High School of Thessaloniki (3rd Municipal Community), in order to improve the energy behavior of the building, as well as raising public awareness about the opportunities offered to increase vegetation in urban areas. The prevailing internal climatic conditions before the implementation of the project do not create conditions of comfort, despite the fact that large amounts of energy are consumed. This is because on the one hand the building lacks substantial thermal protection and on the other hand because the age of the facilities results in their low efficiency. The overall goal of the project, by creating a planted roof, as a passive energy saving technique, is the sustainable improvement of the urban environment and the quality of life. Given that the selected building complex is energy-intensive, houses school units and is located in an extremely densely populated area, the resulting benefits are: - Improving the energy behavior of the building complex (reducing the intensity of energy consumption - energy saving) while improving thermal comfort inside. - The improvement of the urban environment and the microclimate of the area (gas pollution, noise pollution, aesthetics, rainwater management). - The dissemination, demonstration and encouragement of the use of Renewable Energy Sources (RES), information, education and awareness of citizens and especially students, parents, teachers and neighbors. - The awareness of the citizens for the rational use of energy resulting in the saving of the consumed energy in the buildings and the formation of environmental consciousness. Benefiting from the implementation of the project are the students, teachers and other employees in the aforementioned school units, the locals and consequently, all citizens. . The prevailing indoor climate does not create comfort conditions, although large amounts of energy are consumed. This is because on the one hand the building lacks substantial thermal protection and on the other hand because the age of the facilities results in their low efficiency. The planted roof contributes to the reduction of energy consumed for heating and cooling. The school will act as a demonstration space for this new technology and will therefore be a means of raising public awareness on the rational use of energy. The general objective - framework for the creation of a planted roof, as a passive energy saving technique, is the sustainable improvement of the urban environment and the quality of life. Given that the building complex he has chosen is energy-intensive, houses school units and is located in an extremely densely populated area, the resulting benefits are: - Improving the energy behavior of the building complex (reducing the intensity of energy consumption - saving energy) with parallel improvement of thermal comfort inside, - The improvement of the urban environment and the microclimate of the area (gas pollution, noise pollution, aesthetics, rainwater management), - The dissemination, demonstration and encouragement of the use of RES, information, education (through of the demonstration) and awareness of the citizens and especially of the students, parents, teachers and neighborhoods and - The awareness of the citizens for the rational use of energy resulting in the saving of the consumed energy in the buildings and the formation of environmental consciousness. In short, the beneficiaries are the students themselves, the teachers - other employees, the locals and consequently, all the citizens.
