The project concerns the construction of a planted roof of 375 m² in the 32nd Kindergarten – 53rd Primary School in the 3rd Municipal Community of the Municipality of Thessaloniki, in order to improve the energy behaviour of the building, as well as to raise citizens’ awareness of the possibilities offered to increase plant cover in the urban area. The prevailing enclimatic conditions prior to the implementation of the project do not create conditions of comfort, although large amounts of energy are consumed. This is because, on the one hand, the building lacks substantial thermal protection and, on the other, because the age of the installations results in their low performance. The overall objective of the project, with the creation of a planted roof, as a passive energy saving technique, is the sustainable improvement of the urban environment and quality of life. Given that the building complex that has been selected is energetic, houses school units and is located in an extremely densely built area, the resulting benefits are: — Improving the energy behaviour of the building complex (reducing the intensity of energy consumption – heating energy saving) while improving the thermal comfort inside. Improvement of the urban environment and microclimate of the region (gas pollution, noise pollution, aesthetics, rainwater management). The dissemination, demonstration and encouragement of the use of Renewable Energy Sources (RES), information, education and awareness among citizens, especially pupils, parents, teachers and residents. Citizens’ awareness of the rational use of energy resulting in the saving of energy consumption in buildings and the formation of environmental awareness. The beneficiaries of the project are pupils, teachers and other employees in the above mentioned school units, the periphery and by extension, all citizens.
