Energy upgrade of Olympion cinema complex

The historic cinema complex “Olympion” (which includes the rooms “Olympion” and “Palos Zannas”, as well as the offices of the Thessaloniki Film Festival), serves 2 of the country’s largest international artistic events, the Thessaloniki Film Festival held every November and the Thessaloniki Documentary Festival held every March, as well as screenings and various other events during most months of the year. Today the complex covers the heating and cooling needs of its spaces by combining central heating with oil, a large cooler of old technology without inverters, which uses no longer approved refrigerant. The dependence of the cooling of the assembly on the operation of only a large refrigeration unit does not provide security in the event of failure or flexibility in the partial operation to cover part of the spaces. Therefore, the supply and installation of new cooling-heating equipment, of the same power, but with better energy characteristics and a greater temperature range based on heat pumps and circulators with inverters using an approved refrigerant is an urgent need not to jeopardise the operation of the complex, especially during the major international events of the Festival. At the same time, the supply and installation of new equipment allows energy savings and the reduction of emissions. It is made with small adjustments to the connections of machinery in the loft and does not affect the other spaces and networks of the building. For the efficiency and controlled operation of the above and to achieve optimum performance and safe operation, the present project will provide and install a new central control system (BMS) that will cooperate and upgrade the existing one. The energy-intensive luminaires of the 2 cinemas are also replaced with new LEDs with better energy efficiency led lamps, as required for public buildings. For the installation of the above machines that will be purchased by the Thessaloniki Film Festival, the necessary connections to existing hydraulic and electrical networks and the adaptations and upgrades of the latter are required so that the new systems are fully operational. It also includes the removal of existing machinery from the roof of the building, training of staff and maintenance of equipment for 2 years. With the implementation of the project, the energy category of the complex is upgraded from D to B of the Energy Efficiency Regulation (KENAK).
