“Improving accessibility of the provincial network from Katakolo (Agios Andreas junction) to the entrance of Pyrgos (railway line)”

The project concerns the upgrading of 2 sections of road axis in the Prefecture of Ilia: The first section of “Agios Ioannis Tower”, 3.370 m long, is the first part of the capital Provincial Road (EO) 01 “Katakolos Tower”, which serves the basic connection of the cruise port of Katakolos with the National Road Patras Pyrgos, for tourists’ access to Ancient Olympia. It also serves access to the settlements of Skourochori – Granitseika – Vytinika and the densely populated coastal zone Katakolos Pyrgos, mainly in its first suburban part, Pyrgos Agios Ioannis. Within the framework of the project, the detour of Agios Ioannis is implemented and in combination with the existing section (Agios Ioannis – Katakolo) is created a direct link between the Port of Katakolos with the EO Patras Pyrgos, for direct access to Ancient Olympia and the other destinations of the Prefecture of Ilia. The rest of the EO 01 St. John Tower, after the completion of the new axis, will mainly serve local connections between Pyrgos Katakolou. The project provides for the enhancement of the peri-urban section Pyrgos-Agios Ioannis, with the creation of a cycling path, walkway, planting and electric lighting. The project achieves the functional upgrading of an important road axis connecting an entry gateway to tourist flows, the Port of Katakolos as part of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-M), with the highest level of construction, with its internally productive, touristic and cultural zones, with an approximation of the site. The removal of opposite movements ensures a much better level of road safety of the section.
