The Historical Monastery of St. Theodore is located in the town of Corfu, in the area of “Stratia” Garitsa in direct contact with the archaeological site of the Temple of Artemis and has been declared an entire monument with the P.D. 61/12-3-1925. It is a nunnery in which, up until the last century, women from the best and richest families of Corfu who bequeathed their belongings to the monastery. During the Venetian occupation it was one of the richest monasteries of Corfu in icons, objects of value and relics. The archive of the monastery, one of the most important on the island, was destroyed during the fire of 1915 along with about half the south wing of the monastery. Of particular archaeological value is the monastery’s katholikon, which was probably built in the 5th century, in the type of the three-aisled Basilica with a narthex, almost entirely from the materials of the adjacent temple of Artemis by reprocessing its material. The most important archaeological site of the sanctuary of Artemis, from which the well-known pediment of Gorgos stands out, was restored and emerged during the Third CSF.The monastery complex has a trapezoidal square plan and is organised around an almost square atrium central enclosure measuring 25.00x22.00m. The north side occupies the katholikon and the bell tower, where the main entrance is located, while the other three sides are the wings of the cells and other areas of the monastery. The proposed project includes restoration works of the monument due to the fire of 1915. In this way, the monastery will be attributed to the residents of the area as well as to the visitors, fully functional and safe.
