Intelligent Natural Gas Network

The proposed project is based on the theoretical background of the “Factory of the Future”, focusing on the field of Natural Gas Distribution. The aim of the project is the study, design and implementation of a series of actions and innovative technologies aiming at the operation of the company DEDA S.A. based on the philosophy and principles of the “Factory of the Future”. The Natural Gas Distribution Networks Sector, in which the company operates, is one of the important areas of application of these principles, as they are included in the case of critical infrastructure management. The project specifies the partnership between the company DEDA S.A. and the Laboratory of Production Organisation (Industrial Management and Operational Research of the School of Mechanical Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens), while two more companies, Spaceatos Hellas, will be employed. DEDA (Other Greece Gas Distribution Company S.A.) was established on 2 January 2017 and is responsible for the construction, extensions and activations of natural gas networks and supplies throughout the country outside Attica, Thessaly and Thessaloniki, and has developed for the next 20 years a large project of construction and extensions in 18 cities of Greece. In the context of the project, in the first stage, there will be a development of the original architecture of the company. This architecture will cover different perspectives of the organisation in order to complete all levels of information systems of the “Factory of the Future”. Next, a modeling of the business processes of DEDA S.A. will be implemented based on the previous architecture and using a specialised application of Operational Process Management (BPMS), which will be selected in the framework of the project. The project will carry out a study of the implementation of the communication network of the company, which will be developed in parallel with the network of natural gas pipelines. The network will be the basic communication structure of measurement and surveillance systems with the central systems for collection and management of applications. In a direct connection, the design of the data collection centre will be implemented, in which techniques will be applied to ensure the vertical communication of the information systems of the Future Factory. In addition, the design and development of a smart secure portal will be carried out in order to exchange information between the smart Natural Gas meters and the data collection centre in a fast, intelligent safe way. Moreover, DEDA is obliged to have smart meters installed by 2020 in order to achieve the Community target of replacing 80 % of conventional cash. A monitoring system for existing networks (pipeline surveillance system) will also be developed using signals received from the fibre, which will work itself as a sensor for identifying phenomena, malfunctions or malicious actions that may affect the operation of the pipelines. The reception of the signals will initiate the creation of warnings, which in turn can lead, either to the intervention of workshops to solve problems, or to the use of unmanned air vehicles for direct on-site inspection. Then a Business Intelligence module will be developed for communication between information systems and automation at the different levels of DEDA information systems architecture, utilising Cloud technologies and the philosophy of Internet of Things through the Integrated Technologies and Automation at the different levels of DEDA information systems architecture, utilising Cloud technologies and the philosophy of Internet of Things through the Integrated Technology
