Recreational Diving Oasis with Artificial Reefs

The main objective of the project of the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HRC) for the promotion of marine tourism in the Region of Crete is the exploitation of research results and the transfer of innovative know-how in the field of the use of special artificial habitats for the creation of organised marine areas (oases) offered for recreational diving activities. With the application of the know-how of EL.KETH, a series of undersea artificial operations will be immediately able to settle very close to the major urban and tourist centres of Crete and especially in areas of relatively small seabed that do not show any particular ecological, fishing or archaeological interest. The competitive advantage of the establishment of an extensive network of underwater “oases” for recreational diving relates to the need to upgrade the quality of the diving product and in general the services of alternative tourism in the Region of Crete, the international promotion of the island as a diving destination and the possibility of access to new tourist markets while lengthening the tourist season. In the context of this project the demonstration of the innovative know-how developed by EL.KE.TH. The Underwater Biotechnology Park of Crete is offered for the installation of the project as all required licenses have already been approved.
