The aim of the project is the preparation of a Regional Plan for the Adjustment to Climate Change (PESPKA) in the Region of Central Macedonia (MCI). Climate change is already under way and is one of the greatest global challenges of our time. The consequences of climate change are increasingly being felt and addressing them requires immediate action and cooperation between local, regional and national authorities. The effects of climate change create chain reactions with negative effects on both the natural environment, society and the economy. Extreme weather phenomena, increasing the average atmosphere temperature, reducing rainfall and rising sea levels are just a few of the changes. The natural environment is expected to reduce biodiversity and increase the intensity of forest fires. In geomorphology, it is estimated that the increase in sea level by even a few centimetres of a meter will result in the risk of coastal settlements, the disappearance of tourist beaches and the intensity of oversalting of aquifers, especially in river delta and coastal wetlands. The European Union is a pioneer in the fight against climate change, with the adoption of advanced legislative initiatives on both mitigation and adaptation to climate change. In addition, it has unilaterally set ambitious targets linked to the Paris Agreement. For example, these objectives shall include: Reduce CO2 emissions by at least 40 % by 2030, by improving energy efficiency and wider use of renewable energy sources. Increasing resilience through adaptation to the effects of climate change. At the national level, the Ministry of Environment and Energy (RIS) recently published the National Strategy for the Adaptation to Climate Change, as well as relevant guidelines for the implementation of actions in specific areas. Regardless of climate scenarios and predictions, the impact of climate change will increase in the coming decades, due to the unsuccessful effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in previous years. Adaptation measures must therefore be taken to address the inevitable effects of climate change and their economic, environmental and social costs. The estimated impact of climate change poses particular challenges to Regional Self-Government. In the UK, regional authorities are at the forefront of reducing vulnerability to the various effects of climate change. Preventing and addressing emergencies arising from catastrophic phenomena such as floods and forest fires, the design of infrastructures capable of responding to and adapting to new conditions, the management of particularly important natural resources, such as water supply and irrigation, and the adaptation of the structured environment and the economy to the new conditions that are being formed, will require enormous effort, organisation and resources. The UKM is strongly threatened by climate change because of its special characteristics. The PESPKA project foreseen by this project will be a dynamic tool that will arise from consultation with all stakeholders and will be implemented with coordinator of the Region, in cooperation with the municipalities and local bodies.
