Monitoring and utilising the Parental Areas of the Municipality of Drama

The coastal regions are unique ecosystems that offer many services to humans. Urbanisation is a major problem because it can degrade them and reduce their functionality. On the contrary, proper management can provide important services to citizens, such as improving the quality of life, protecting streams from pollutants and mitigating the effects of climate change. The aim of this project is to protect and exploit the coastal areas of the Municipality of Drama, which is a priority especially after the establishment of a UNESCO headquarters in the city of Drama in June 2016. The Chair has the theme “Conservation and ecotourism in coastal and deltaic ecosystems” with an acronym (Con-E-ECT) and belongs to the Department of Forestry and Natural Environment of the TEI of Eastern Macedonia. In order to achieve the goal, we will initially record all the coastal areas of the city of Drama using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and then, using special protocols, they will be evaluated. Measurements will also be taken to assess the quality and quantity of streams that penetrate the city of Drama. Based on the results of the evaluation of coastal areas and hydrological data, a study will be written that will propose solutions for better conservation and exploitation of coastal areas to improve their quality of life. Finally, there will be activities to inform and raise citizens’ awareness of the functions and importance of coastal ecosystems.
