Frangokastello Sfakion was built in the 14th century by the Venetians, in order to protect themselves from pirates and from the often rebellious Sfakians. It has been associated with the Cretan chieftain Daskalogiannis, as well as the Epirus chieftain Hatzimichalis Dalianis (1828) and the fierce battle fought between the fortified Greeks and the Turkish forces. The Greeks were defeated and many of them were killed. This murderous battle was associated with the rare phenomenon observed in the area and is known as “Drosulites”. With the proposed project, this important monument of West Crete will be restored, in order to solve a number of static problems and to exploit the fortress’ spaces. Thus, the monument will be a pole of attraction for residents and visitors.
