Restoration and promotion of five churches in the National Park of Samaria, Chania

The National Park of Samaria is one of the most important forests in Greece, while its glamour extends beyond the country’s borders. For this reason, it has been declared the Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO (1981) as a global designation attributed to the proper management of important areas due to their natural and cultural identity. The intense relief and constant alternations of the landscape result in a variety of ecosystems, thus providing shelter for people and organisms seeking protection. As a result, traces of human activity can be traced from prehistory to this day. The result of this was the construction of the five single-room temples between the 14th and the 18th centuries. These temples, built with local materials and resources, are fully integrated into the natural environment of the gorge and adapt to it in wonderful harmony. Given that they are approximately on the hiking route, their restoration and promotion will contribute to the greatest extent in the emergence of the National Park. The rendering of preserved and restored sanctuaries, in addition to religious and cultural importance, will greatly suit the Gorge and will give additional prestige to the site, thus contributing to the promotion and development of the natural and cultural heritage of the place.
