The Region of Crete has drawn up an Action Plan to combat Air Pollution (SCHEDIA of Crete) and has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Crete and the Technical University of Crete in order to have the technical assistance and scientific supervision required to contribute to the implementation of the general objectives of the ECA 14122/2011, namely the monitoring of air quality in order to address air pollution and safeguard the protection of the environment and public health. Addressing the problem of air pollution requires the reliable, continuous and detailed recording of air pollutants in order to assess the risk, propose targeted realistic solutions to reduce pollution, protect the population from exposure during pollution incidents and ultimately evaluate the effectiveness of policies to prevent/reduce air pollution and inform and protect the public. In this context, the Region of Crete will obtain the necessary equipment for the creation of a network of urban and peri-urban air quality monitoring stations in the two largest urban centres of Heraklion and Chania. At the same time it will be integrated into the network of these stations, the background station belonging to the University of Crete, located in Finokalia Lassithi and covers Greece’s obligations to the EU regarding the monitoring of air quality since 1997. At the same time, it will be possible for these stations to function as centres for providing environmental education to the educational community, contributing to the public’s awareness of the protection of the environment.
