The project concerns the strengthening of the monitoring of the proper operation of polluting activities for water (point sources of pollution) such as SELs, oil mills, cheese and other polluting activities, monitoring carried out by the competent authorities of the Region of Crete in the framework of the implementation of the approved Water Basin Management Plan of the Water Department of Crete, as well as compliance with environmental legislation. For this purpose, a Quality Monitoring Programme for surface and groundwater was established in the Region of Crete, which includes specific sampling areas, sampling at regular intervals and carrying out measurements of specific physico-chemical and microbiological parameters. The results of the measurements will assess the burden on surface and groundwater from point anthropogenic potential sources of pollution, which are the treatment and disposal points of urban waste water, oil mills and cheese mills waste, as well as industrial waste as appropriate. For the preparation of the Quality Monitoring Programme, criteria such as the location, combined with the concentration of polluting activities, the existence of complaints over the past years according to the Office’s record, the quality monitoring of water carried out within the framework of the National Monitoring Network pursuant to PD 71/2007 by other actors such as the IGME for groundwater and the ELKETHE for inland surface waters, etc., will be used for the implementation of the environmental monitoring programme. Furthermore, it is necessary to strengthen controls on compliance with environmental conditions of activity in the case of complaints or exceptional needs by carrying out appropriate sampling and measurements according to the nature of the polluting activity concerned.
