Upgrading Greece's satellite tracking system for search and rescue missions

Enhancing Maritime Safety and Emergency Response through Advanced Satellite Technology

Overview: Greece has modernized its search and rescue operations by implementing advanced satellite communication technology. This upgrade enables the Hellenic Coast Guard and Air Force to expand their surveillance capabilities, accurately locate distress signals, and respond more swiftly to emergencies, thereby enhancing maritime safety and saving lives. European Commission

Objectives:

  1. Enhance Surveillance Coverage: Expand the monitoring area to ensure comprehensive coverage of Greece's search and rescue region.
  2. Improve Response Times: Reduce the duration between receiving distress signals and deploying rescue operations.
  3. Accurate Distress Signal Localization: Utilize satellite technology to precisely pinpoint the location of distress signals from aircraft, ships, and individuals.

Key Features:

  • Satellite Antennas Installation: Deployment of eight satellite antennas at Hellenic Air Force bases to track Low-Earth Orbit (LEO), Medium-Earth Orbit (MEO), and Geostationary Orbit (GEO) satellites.
  • Advanced Mission Control Systems: Integration of mission control center equipment and software at the Hellenic Coast Guard Headquarters in Piraeus for efficient management of rescue operations.
  • Comprehensive Training and Support: Provision of training and technical support for a duration of seven years to ensure effective utilization of the new systems.

Target Audience:

  • Search and Rescue Personnel: Operators and coordinators involved in maritime and aerial rescue missions.
  • Maritime and Aviation Sectors: Entities operating within Greece's maritime and airspace regions.
  • General Public: Individuals who may benefit from enhanced safety measures during emergencies.

Impact: The implementation of this satellite tracking system has significantly reduced response times to distress signals, now capped at 15 minutes—a substantial improvement from the previous range of 20 minutes to 2.5 hours. This advancement ensures rapid and accurate responses to emergencies, thereby increasing the likelihood of successful rescue operations and enhancing overall maritime safety.

Recognitions and Awards: While specific awards for this project are not documented, the integration of Medium Earth Orbiting Search and Rescue (MEOSAR) technology aligns Greece with international standards, reflecting its commitment to adopting cutting-edge solutions for public safety.
