DEVELOPMENT OF A BIOWASTE COLLECTION AND MANAGEMENT NETWORK IN THE CITY OF ATHENS

With the development of a network of biowaste collection and management, the Municipality of Athens, sets specific quantitative and qualitative objectives, plans new actions that are called upon to implement by changing the habits and conscience of the citizens. More specifically, it emphasises a significant waste stream that of municipal biowaste, and plans to implement a separate collection program due to the need to reduce the amount of biowaste of the Municipality deposited in the landfill. The reduction of biowaste led to the landfill is achieved through home composting and separate collection of biowaste programmes by introducing a ‘coffee bucket’ network. Furthermore, by targeting green wastes, and their initial treatment, it is expected to achieve a drastic reduction in the volume of transport to the facilities of EDSNA (EMAK Liosia) and on the other hand the reuse of at least 30 % of the quantities produced for soil cover and enrichment of the soil substrate of the communal green areas of the Municipality.
