The natural dangers in Greece are an almost daily reality. All kinds of structures that constitute the built environment are constantly exposed to small and extreme environmental hazards, most important being earthquakes and landslides. The same is true of the natural environment. Therefore, the protection of the structured and natural environment against these risks is an important priority for our country. For this purpose a modern institutional framework (e.g. modern earthquake-resistant regulations), very well-trained human resources and a modern and internationally competitive mechanism for the production of new know-how are required. All of these together offer to the state and society the necessary and necessary components of policy-making and strategy to improve the security of society and the various economic, cultural and social activities. In order to achieve these goals, however, the relevant research bodies (University, Polytechnic) need to have the necessary high quality modern research facilities and equipment. This project aims to contribute to addressing this need, aiming to make the Laboratory of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Seismic Engineering, a nodal laboratory of the Department of Civil Engineering of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), as one of the most important workshops in the field of reducing the risk of structured (all nature constructions of civil engineering) and natural environments in Greece and in Europe, in this way, and in this way, in order to serve the objectives.
