The genetic variation in the genomes of 3,000 Alentejan pig animals will be studied with last generation sequencing. Association studies between identified SNPs and collected phenotypes (growth, nut productivity, carcass characteristics, meat quality) will identify molecular markers for use in the improvement programme. A molecular traceability system will also be developed for the breed and its products.
