EcoX is a pioneering project on a global scale, based on patented technology that enables the biotransformation of used cooking oil (UCO) into soap. This innovation was initially applied to SOAPY, an educational kit raising awareness of the environmental risks of UCO disposal. With European funding, the technology was scaled up to produce upcycled detergents using clean energy, resulting in a range of approximately 70 household and 35 professional products.
Built on a circular economy business model, EcoX promotes innovative waste management, engaging citizens, schools, waste operators, and local businesses. This collective effort has fostered packaging reuse, reduced single-use plastics, and increased environmental literacy through hundreds of workshops, reaching over 45,000 families.
EcoX has generated significant social and economic impacts:
- Over 500 tonnes of UCO collected and 500 tonnes of upcycled detergents produced
- Qualified jobs created in low-density territories
- Local economies strengthened through bulk sales in over 200 partner stores
- Sustainable economic growth driven by innovation and sustainability
- Public health and water quality improved by preventing UCO pollution
The project is being replicated in other European countries, demonstrating strong potential for international transferability. EcoX contributes to the European Green Deal and 2030 Agenda goals, focusing on responsible production and consumption, climate action, clean water, and partnerships for development.
EcoX represents an innovative ecosystem delivering measurable environmental impact, boosting local economies, and serving as a replicable model globally.
