The aim of the project is modernisation of the infrastructure of STEM study directions of the University of Latvia (hereinafter – LU) and concentration of resources in the Academic Centre of the University of Latvia in Tornakalns, including medical colleges established in the University of Latvia, in order to become one of the leading universities in the Baltic region. The aim of the project corresponds to the developed development strategy of the University of Latvia for 2016-2020, which is coordinated with the Ministry of Education and Science. The total eligible funding of the project is EUR 13026117, including ERDF funding EUR 11072199 and state budget funding EUR 1953918. 1. Construction of STEM study infrastructure modernisation, where the following sub-activities are planned: 1.1. Construction of the University of Latvia Academic Centre Scientific House (Jelgavas Street 3, Riga), 1.3. Establishment of the Practical Training Clinical Base of Faculty of Medicine of the University of Latvia by reconstruction of State Ltd. “Paula Stradins Clinical University Hospital” 10. 2. Purchase and installation of training equipment, equipment, ICT and other tangible assets in colleges of LU and LU where the following sub-activities are planned: 2.1. Purchase of training equipment and equipment in LU; 2.2. Purchase of training equipment for LU colleges; 2.3. Purchase of equipment and furniture necessary for furnishing study rooms of the science home. 3. Information and publicity measures. 4. Project management and implementation. Within the project, 42 STEM study programmes in the following thematic areas of education will be modernised: Wildlife sciences (3 apps); Physical sciences (12 apps); Mathematics and statistics (4 apps); Computer technology (4 apps); Treatment (5 apps); Nursing (4 apps); Pharmacy (2 apps); Medical services (2 apps); Environmental protection (3 programmes); Architecture and construction (1 apps); The period of implementation of the project is 55 months from the signing of the agreement on project implementation (November, 2017 – end of May, 2022). Before the agreement was concluded, the following preparatory works were carried out – the development of the technical project for the construction of the science house was completed, construction project expertise was carried out, the building board received a permit for the construction of the construction works, and construction of the Science House was commenced in July 2017. Upon completion of the project, the STEM study directions implemented by the University of Latvia will be concentrated in the Academic Centre of the University of Latvia and the infrastructure necessary for STEM studies has been modernised according to modern requirements. As a result of the project, effective use of infrastructure and human resources of LU STEM study directions will be ensured, fragmentation of LU infrastructure is reduced and synergy between study and research sectors is promoted. The modernised infrastructure will promote attraction of additional students to the STEM study programmes, ensure the preparation of high-qualified specialists necessary for the development of the Latvian economy, as well as promote the capacity of the University of Latvia to export higher education and attract foreign students.
