Modernisation of the port infrastructure by ensuring the increase of the depths of the senals and basins and the safety of sailing in Constanta Port

The general objective of the project is the modernisation of the Constanta port infrastructure by increasing the depths in the access halls, the manoeuvring basins and the quay basins in order to increase the use and market share of shipping in Romania. In most of the port basin, the existing depths do not ensure the efficient use of the existing quay infrastructure, leading to delays in carrying out mooring/departure manoeuvres and the occurrence of costs generated by additional loading/discharge and towage operations for disabling. Thus, the execution of dredging works would ensure the safety of manoeuvres in the port basins and could ensure more efficient use of the existing infrastructure, without the need for adaptation, consolidation or extension of existing quays. Through the works to increase the depths in the access halls, the manoeuvring basins and the watersheds of the Port of Constanta provided for in the Feasibility Study, the project demonstrates a clear coherence with the Sub-Action “Increasing navigation depths in harbour basins and canals”. It will improve navigation conditions within the Port of Constanta, thus linking it to the Action “Investments to improve navigation conditions on the Danube and Danube waterways, as well as within ports located on the central TEN-T, including the purchase of equipment and multifunctional vessels to ensure navigability on the Danube”. The share of higher capacity vessels that will be moored in Constanta will also increase, thus increasing the use of this port, which is in line with Specific Objective 1.3 Increase the use of waterways and ports located on the TEN-T core network, Priority Axis 1 – Improving mobility through the development of the TEN-T network and the metro. As a result of the access and operation of vessels with a higher capacity in the Port of Constanta, the volume of goods transported in this port will increase, thus contributing to the achievement of the result indicator in OS 1.3, 2S3 “Inland Waterway Goods”. Moreover, in view of the works in the project that will lead to the modernisation of the Constanta Port, the project also contributes to achieving the output indicator 2S6 – “Ports located on upgraded TEN-T” of O.S.1.3, A.P.1. The project is part of the LIOP Large Infrastructure Operational Programme 2014-2020, Priority Axis 1 Improving mobility through the development of TEN-T and metro networks, Specific Objective 1.3 Increasing the use of waterways and ports located on the TEN-T core network.
