The aim of the project "Phase of the project "Extension and modernisation of the water and wastewater infrastructure in Bistriþa-Nasaud County" is to continue the works related to Phase I of the SOP Environment 2007-2013, in order to achieve the objectives assumed under Financing Contract No 101381/22.03.2010. The physical indicators of the project aim at expanding and rehabilitating the drinking water and sewerage infrastructure in order to achieve the targets assumed by the Accession Treaty. The project is addressed to some localities in Bistriþa-Nasaud county (located in the northern part of Romania – North West Region). The general objective is to increase the level of collection and treatment of urban waste water, as well as to ensure the drinking water supply of the population. As regards indicator C018* (additional population benefiting from better water supply), the total number of people who will benefit from the drinking water supply as a result of the increase in the treatment level and the transport capacity of the networks will be about 134,101 inhabitants, i.e. 1.67 % of the total inhabitants in Romania who still need connection to the centralised water supply network in localities of more than 50 inhabitants (8.018.086 inhabitants – data calculated on the basis of information provided by INS/ANAR), i.e. 0.67 % of the total inhabitants in Romania (20.121.641 inhabitants – census data provided by INS). The degree of service of the population to the public drinking water supply system in the coverage of the major project will increase from 95 % in 2010 to 98 % in 2019. As regards water quality, it should be noted that according to the data provided by the Ministry of Health in accordance with Directive 98/83/EC on the quality of water intended for human consumption, there are no water quality problems in the project area in 2016. Through Phase I, a water treatment plant was developed, thus ensuring the necessary conditions for the supply of drinking water to the appropriate physical-chemical parameters. As regards indicator C019* (additional population benefitting from better waste water treatment), in accordance with the provisions of the Financing Application, the investments made through the project will ensure compliance with the requirements established by national and Community legislation for a total of 167,594 equivalent inhabitants. This results in a total of approximately 0.81 % of the total equivalent inhabitants in Romania (20798547 l.e. at 2014 level – data provided by ANAR) and a total of approximately 1.58 % of the equivalent population still required to be connected to centralised waste water systems in Romania (10630137 l.e. at 2014 level – data calculated on the basis of information provided by ANAR).
