The project “The Phase of the Integrated Waste Management System Project in Iasi County” is implemented at the level of Iasi County, part of the North-East Development Region of Romania, with a total population of 832,385 inhabitants (2010). All the investments foreseen under this project aim to complement the infrastructure already in place in Iași County, which together ensures an integrated waste management system, so that minimum standards will be ensured in order to comply with EU requirements in the field of environmental protection and with the targets Romania has assumed under the Accession Treaty. The present project, representing phase 2 of investments initiated by SOP ENV 2007-2013, ensures compliance with the physical indicators established at the level of the financing application and contributes to the fulfilment of LIOP indicators by completing investments and operationalising the following facilities: — TMB station Ţuţora – sorting stations Ţuţora and Ruginoasa – Transfer Stations Balţati and Ruginoasa – Closure of urban warehouse not in compliance with Hârlau At the same time, continued investments will result in: — compliant landfilling and the closure of non-compliant landfills, in accordance with the provisions of the European directives and the commitments made in the Accession Treaty, will contribute to reducing the negative impact on the environment, – expanding selective collection so as to ensure that the targets for increasing the share of recycled/recovered waste in the total amount of waste collected are met. The measure will also result in the reduction of the amount of waste stored and thus increasing the life of the landfill; — optimising the waste management system by reducing the impact of waste transport to treatment/storage facilities.
