The objectives of the project were established on the basis of the LIOP 2014-2020 objectives and the 2020 Strategy (Thematic Objective 06 – Preserving and protecting the environment and promoting resource efficiency), namely: — reducing the amount of waste landfilled; — promoting the use of waste for the production of alternative raw materials by increasing the amount of recycled/recovered waste; — creating decent living conditions by establishing efficient waste management structures and ensuring a clean living environment. The project proposed for funding from LIOP 2014-2020 represents Phase 2 of the project “Integrated Waste Management System in Caras-Severin County”, which aims to continue investments in the solid waste management sector, started in Phase 1, through SOP Environment 2007-2013, by supplementing/extension of the existing waste management infrastructure, by making investments leading to the development of an integrated waste management system, so that the standards of compliance with the EU environmental protection requirements are met, as well as the targets assumed by Romania through the Treaty of Accession to the European Union, namely: — reducing the annual amount of biodegradable waste landfilled by 65 % compared to the total quantity landfilled in 1995; a considerable reduction in the storage of packaging waste (88 % recovery, 70 % recycling); — closure of non-compliant landfills.
