ROCCAS Development and implementation at national level of the organizational framework necessary to initiate colorectal cancer screening

The GENERAL [OG] objective of this project is to optimise patients’ access to quality medical services by improving the level of medical training dedicated to early detection, diagnosis and treatment of precancerous colorectal lesions, specialists working in public medical institutions or under contract with CNAS in all development regions of Romania (South, South-East, South-East, South-West, North-East, Centre, West, North-West and Bucharest-Ilfov). This general objective responds to two topics of national interest in the field of health, namely: (1) Definition and development of the standardised methodological framework for national implementation of pilot projects and prevention and treatment actions for precancerous colorectal lesions; (2) Creation of a group of specialists in Romania to act proactively in the medium to long term to reduce the cases reached in terminal phases of colorectal cancer among the propulation. The socio-economic positive effects of project implementation are multiple and can be grouped on the following directions: EF-1. Reducing morbidity and mortality associated with colorectal cancer, by improving the level of competence of medical professionals in early identification and treatment of associated pathologies. The National Health Strategy 2014-2020 supports the need to prepare the implementation of the long-deferred early detection interventions through population screening for the two common forms of cancer (colo-rectal and breast), according to European recommendations. EF-2. Improve the standard of life of patients detected and offer a chance for treatment and healing in case of early detection of precancerous conditions. EF-3. The reduction of the indicator of potential years of life lost, by causes of death and sex, in Romania, according to data published by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, in 2013, ranks colo-rectal cancer in the 8th position for women (3.9 YLL) and position 11 in the case of men (5.6 YLL) among the most common causes of death.
