At present, one of the most important challenges, which Romania’s development has to face, is to increase economic competitiveness, by improving the capacity for innovation and research through the development of products, including food, safe, affordable and nutritionally optimised, as well as new methodologies. The aim of this project is to increase, at national level, competitiveness in the food supplement sectors, accessible, nutritionally improved, by developing and placing on the market a supplement-type food product based on organic selenium enriched celery and vitamins (A and E). The main objective of the project proposal is to develop, design and implement the methodology for obtaining a food with improved nutritional qualities, reformulated as a supplement, capitalising on indigenous varieties of Apium graveolens L. (steel) through innovative methodologies. The methodology ensures the increase of the content of Apium graveolens L. in bioactive compounds, through enrichment in selenium and synergistic vitamins in the manifestation of nutritional attributes, respectively A and E. In the vision of the project, the stated objective is achievable by creating the knowledge transfer partnership between a higher education institution with research and development activity, namely the University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine Cluj-Napoca and an enterprise, S.C. Transvital COSMETICS SRL, in order to create synergies between the specific research activity of the institution (which has important expertise in the field and appropriate facilities) and the business environment, represented in this case the company specialised in the development of food products, of the type of supplement, intended for marketing. Elaboration of the methodology for obtaining the food product, supplement type, based on the natural substrate of Apium graveolens L. (steel) enriched in selenium and vitamins (A and E), corresponds to the objectives assumed by our country in the field of Research, Development, Innovation, in line with the Europe 2020 strategy, for smart, sustainable growth in favour of inclusion. The project, with an objective under the Competitiveness Operational Plan 2015-2020, aims to contribute to increasing economic competitiveness by strengthening research, technological development and innovation, promoting investments in research, development, innovation, developing links and synergies between enterprises, research and development centres and higher education, in particular promoting investments in product development, technology transfer, networking and clustering and open innovation through smart specialisation, as well as supporting validation actions.
