Achieving a European production chain for RFSOI allowing the development of new fields such as RF sensors, communication and 5G – BEYOND5

The general objective of the project will be presented and described; it will also explain how the project contributes to the achievement of the specific objective of the Programme The general objective of the project “Achieving a European Production Chain for RFSOI allowing the development of new fields such as RF of sensors, communication and 5G” (BEYOND5), accepted at ECSEL Joint Undertaking funding is to build a fully European supply chain of electronic components and systems for radio frequency, allowing new RF domains for detection, communication, 5G radio infrastructure and beyond. BEYOND5 is primarily a technology project that gathers the most important European actors covering the entire value chain from materials, semiconductor technologies, component design and systems. BEYOND5 will support and develop the most advanced SOI technologies manufactured in Europe, namely RFSOI and FDSOI. Background: In today’s connected world, demand for mobile communications and instant access to information, anytime and anywhere, has drastically changed the electronic landscape for both consumers and industry. 5G technology will allow connecting in all forms between people, devices, machines and any objects. Such diversity requires a new paradigm in terms of flexibility, not only in terms of performance, but also in terms of scalability and cost. 5G, is one of the most critical infrastructure blocks in our digital economy and society for the next decade: • At application level: 5G will provide access to the ubiquitous virtual network with ultra-high bandwidth and low latency for individual users, as well as to all connected objects. 5G will be the “eyes and ears” of artificial intelligence systems, as it will provide real-time data collection and analysis. At the same time, it will bring the “cluod” into a new dimension, allowing the distribution of calculations and storage throughout the infrastructure. The future 5G infrastructure is expected to serve a wide range of business and industrial users to satidface the needs of the consumer market. • At social level: 5G is a major issue of sovereignty and autonomy for the communications sector and digital infrastructures of the future. All products related to IoT, traffic, medical care, supported by connectivity will benefit European citizens in their daily lives to improve everything, from business to private life. This will influence society as much as smartphones have done in the recent past. It is about communication and connectivity. In this respect, it is very essential for Europe to have full technological sovereignty with a reliable aspect of production, without dependence on foreign solutions that may include hidden agendas, e.g. hidden/dangerous functionalities in com equipment
