From Nano to Macro in Hydrogen Energy – Extension National Hydrogen Center and Fuel Cells – HyRo 2.0

The general objective of the project is to increase the RDI capacity of the National Institute for Research and Development for Criogenic and Isotopic Technologies – ICSI Ramnicu Valcea, in one of the areas of intelligent specialisation mentioned in the National Strategy for Research, Development and Innovation SNCDI 2014-2020, namely in field 3. Energy, Environment and Climate Change. More specifically, the project aims to expand the R & D capacities of ICSI Energy, as an autonomous part of the national Renews infrastructure, so as to strengthen its role as a center of excellence in energy, and through the results of R & D and innovation activities to contribute to the implementation of hydrogen-based energy storage technologies in Romania. Thus, the project is designed to “catalyse” the role of ICSI as a competence center in the field of intelligent specialisation 3. Energy, environment and climate change, subarea 3.1.3 Innovative energy storage technologies. The aim of the project is in accordance with the Institute’s RDI Strategy for the period 2017-2022 which sets out for ICSI Energy the mission of: I. Focus on validating and demonstrating the performance of hydrogen energy technologies, reducing costs and identifying the most appropriate applications for these technologies, but also to develop the framework of cooperative relationships that will allow their penetration on the market. The present project is thus an opportunity and a necessary condition for achieving the objectives set. The biggest challenge, assuming a proven technological viability, is often to advance from the small-scale pilot model and demonstration installations to commercial scale, where the economic parameters and performance characteristics of the solutions analysed are transparent to the market. The creation of an RDI infrastructure, the possibility to use state-of-the-art equipment and software tools suitable for conducting nano-to-macro-level research in hydrogen energy will be able to provide solutions for all these difficult targets and will enable the Institute to broaden its R & D-innovation horizon, create strategic partnerships, attract new researchers and make Romanian research more visible. Through this we can say that the project fully contributes to the achievement of the specific objective of the POC Programme.
