(OG) The overall objective of the project is to strengthen the scientific, technical and innovation capacity in the field of smart specialisation “Energy, Environment and Climate Change” in order to strengthen the performance of nuclear research in Romania, through the realisation of the experimental infrastructure dedicated to the development of the technology of lead-cooled reactors (Athena experimental plant and ChemLab lead chemistry laboratory). The general objective contributes to the achievement of the specific objective OS 1.1 “Increasing scientific capacity in the fields of smart specialisation and health”, of the Competitiveness Operational Programme, POC by: — Increasing scientific capacity in the field of smart specialisation “Energy, Environment and Climate Change”; — Building a global unique research infrastructure to investigate thermohydraulic regimes and chemical mechanisms in a liquid lead environment, as well as through full-scale testing of components/equipment/systems for the ALFRED demonstration reactor; — Strengthening the integration of national R & D and innovation into the major and topical themes of the European Union (development of innovative Generation IV systems); — Increasing the national capacity to participate in international projects, involving experimental investigations. The project will develop innovative technologies for placing on the market nuclear systems capable of ensuring energy security, preventing climate change, under conditions of economic competitiveness in close connection with the European objectives defined in the strategic documents, Partnership Agreement European Commission Romania (http://www.fonduri-ue.ro/acord-parteneriat with reference to SET Plan – (Art. 174. With regard to the development of low-carbon energy technologies, due consideration will be given to the objectives of the SET-Plan]), global agreements to reduce pressures on climate, as well as national commitments and targets in this area (energy mix).
