The main objectives of the project “Implementation of programmes for the care of large beasts in Slovakia” (hereinafter referred to as the “Big Bear 2 project”) is to maintain the favourable condition of the brown bear and the wolf of prey in the Alpine bioregion. At the same time, achieve a favourable status with the wolf of prey in the Pannonian bioregion and lynx of the island in the whole of Slovakia through the implementation of activities from approved care programmes. Those targets are in line with the updated National Biodiversity Strategy to 2020, in particular its objective A.1: The deterioration of all species and habitats and a significant and measurable improvement in their diet. All activities of the project are implemented within the framework of the main activity: Implementation of programmes of care for large beasts, which is divided into sections:Activities in the field of national legislationActivities in the field of practical careActivities in the field of monitoringActivities in the field of education and cooperation with the publicActivities in the field of researchActivities in the field of brown bear care and lynx of the island in conditions outside their natural habitat (“ex situ”)Activities in the field of ensuring and evaluating the ability to survive individuals in conditions “ex situ” and then “in situ” The main output of the project will be the strengthening of legal and institutional protection and management of large carnivores in Slovakia. Other outputs of the project concern improving the system for dealing with damage caused by large beasts, a system of preventive measures to prevent these damage, reducing impacts on large beasts, further strengthening cross-border cooperation, putting monitoring into practice, acquiring new relevant knowledge on large carnivores, improving public work. The project will be implemented within the whole area of expansion of large carnivores (including potential).
