Comprehensive system of air quality modelling in Slovakia

A comprehensive air quality modelling system will serve to ensure modelling requirements arising from the Air Act 137/2010 Coll., Ordinance 244/2016 on air quality, Act 24/2006 on environmental impact assessment, Directives 2008/50/EC and 2004/107/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council, and to:Informovanie of the public and relevant organisations on air quality (current, forecasts for the nearest period and assessment of long-term air quality),Analysis of air quality and determining contributions of individual groups of emission sources as a basis for air quality improvement programmes,Operation of smog warning systems,Assessment of the impact of new or changed emission sources on air quality. There is no rigorous approach other than a system linking the meteorological forecast model and the mathematical air quality models to meet these requirements. These models will form the core of the system. The system will be operated in near real time. The quality of air quality analyses and forecasts at the level of developed EU countries can be achieved by increasing the differentiation in the meteorological model used to match the required spatial resolution of the chemi-transport model. This step requires a multiple increase in the performance and capacity of a high-performance computing system at SHMÚ. This system will be connected to local air quality models with the highest resolution (ten meters), which will be applied once a year for a full year and will aim to assess air quality for the previous year. The results will be stored in the database. Another set of tools will serve to process model data into the necessary outputs (aggregated concentration maps, time evolution maps, time series at defined geographical points, time-aggregated maps and contribution charts of individual types of emission sources, etc.). The selected outputs will be accessible to the public via the SHMÚ public website. The web interface of the tool for assessing the impacts of new resources will be accessible to the professional public upon registration. The system shall also include a validation tool.
