Renewal of cog railway vehicles in the High Tatras

The project is based on the transport policy of the Slovak Republic and on the long-term strategy of ZSSK, a.s., in the field of the modernisation of the fleet of rolling stock in order to provide more attractive and quality services ŽOD. Its basic aim is to contribute to the improvement of the services of ŽOD, to strengthen its competitive position on the transport market and to improve the transport service in the High Tatras region through the procurement of new modern OEJs, which will provide the travelling public with a higher quality of services, comfort and culture of travel, savings in travel time, higher safety and reliability of transport, which should be translated into an increase in the number of passengers of ŽOD and contribution to the growth of efficiency of operation and reduction of negative impacts from transport on the environment. The subject of the project is the procurement of 5 new geared electric units, which will be operated in the locality of the High Tatras on lines with gauge 1000 mm included to Oznica Railway (OZ) and to Tatranská Electric Railway (TEŽ). New modern dual vehicles with adhesion drive and rack drive will be equipped with state-of-the-art technologies and designed for 2nd class passengers with a capacity of at least 90 seats and at least 70 standing seats. They will replace the currently used three obsolete 50 years of unsatisfactory tooth vehicles, the operation of which is only possible on the OŽ line and is inefficient. The measurability of the achievement of the objectives of the project is expressed by the output indicator – the number of trainsets renewed in rail passenger transport of 5 OEJs and the result indicator – the number of passengers carried on public rail passenger transport, which will reach 3 714 058 persons in 2026.
