The OPENMED Consortium (Univerzita P.J. Šafárik v Kosice (UPJŠ), Technical University in Košice (TUKE), University of Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy (UVLF), Neurobiological Institute of the Biomedical Centre SAV (NBÚ BMC SAV) and two partners from the industrial sector – MM MEDICAL s.r.o. and JUHAPHARM s.r.o.) set the priority objectives of the project to solve selected problems of diagnosis and treatment of oncological, cardiovascular and viral diseases, CNS diseases and musculoskeletal diseases in the unique use of partners’ potential in the project. The uniqueness and originality of the OPENMED project lies in the meaningful use of the multidisciplinary environment of Košice’s university and scientific research centres, which are linked by complementary expertise in the fields of medicine, natural and technical sciences and veterinary medicine. This link, combined with an ambitious intention for technological transfer, represents a unique ecosystem of biomedical research in Slovakia. Intensive interdisciplinary cooperation between project partners has translated into the creation of modern research areas bringing together individual new biomedical disciplines, namely: I) nanomedicine and targeted therapy, ii) personalised medicine and iii) regeneration medicine and cell therapy. We are convinced that the overall objective of the project, the creation of a unique eco-system in the OPENMED consortium, consisting of complementary scientific and research biomedical infrastructure and highly qualified professional staff, will lead to improvement of diagnostic and therapeutic approaches in the treatment of the above-mentioned serious civilisation diseases and thus to the improvement of the health status of the population through the application of obtained research results in practice. This objective is strongly correlated with the intentions expressed in the description of the Smart Specialisation Domain “Population Health and Health Technologies”.
